How oral appliance therapy helps
Educational Sleep Medicine blog from West End Dental An oral appliance – sometimes called a dental device or dental appliance – is a small, custom-fit device that’s only worn while you sleep. The device helps you breathe freely by keeping your lower jaw in place to prevent the tongue and other soft tissues from obstructing the airway. While this FDA-cleared treatment doesn’t cure sleep apnea, it will help you sleep without snoring or gasping for air.

Our Sleep Medicine FAQs provide clear answers to common questions regarding evaluations, treatment options, and patient care.

Five simple steps to snoring and sleep apnea symptom relief

Experience safe, fast, and long-lasting snoring and sleep apnea relief with the guidance of an American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Qualified Dentist. Getting started and sticking with treatment is easy: just follow these simple steps.

Steps to treatment

Step 1
Get screened for sleep apnea
If you have not yet been diagnosed with sleep apnea but experience snoring and breathing-related sleep disruption, make an appointment with your primary care provider. A sleep evaluation will determine if you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. While a CPAP is commonly prescribed at this stage, ask your doctor about oral appliance therapy.
Step 2
Visit an AADSM Qualified Dentist
Once your physician refers you for an oral appliance – or if you have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea – it’s time to visit an American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Qualified Dentist. Our dentists have been specially trained in oral appliance therapy and must meet a high standard of practice.
Step 3
Get custom-fit for an oral appliance
During your visit, your dentist will determine which type of appliance is best for you. To make your personalized appliance, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. Once your oral appliance has been created – often in less than 3 weeks – your dentist will show you how to wear and adjust it to ensure maximum comfort and efficacy.
Step 4
Enjoy better sleep, fast!
You can begin using your oral appliance during sleep right away. You’ll soon start to experience deeper sleep, less snoring, and a better quality of rest. Many patients report near-immediate relief from their sleep apnea symptoms and improved overall wellness..
Step 5
Follow up to monitor improvement
Your dentist will schedule follow-up appointments. At these quick sessions, your dentist will ensure your oral appliance works effectively to treat your symptoms and fits as comfortably as possible during sleep.
