Dental Implants vs Dentures
Portland, OR

We here at West End Dental are here to restore your smile and with it your quality of life. Dental implants and dentures are two of the most common means we use for restoring teeth. To figure out which option is right for you, let us consider some for the differences between the two.

How do Dentures work?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that replace lost teeth and tissue. Both partial dentures and complete dentures are available. Dental adhesives hold the dentures in place and allow you to chew most foods and speak normally.

Your dentures are made especially for you and resemble your normal teeth. Some people worry that dentures will make them look different. On the contrary, the change in your appearance is relatively minor, and dentures can even improve your smile and facial appearance.

Downsides of Dentures

The main drawback of dentures is that you must remove, clean, and store them every night. Moreover, your mouth can change over time, so dentures that fit perfectly today may not fit as well later on. Also, dental adhesives can lose their strength at the end of the day, causing the dentures to loosen. There are also certain foods, such as sticky foods, that cause considerable trouble if you consume them while wearing dentures.

At first, your new dentures may feel a bit uncomfortable or loose for the first few weeks until the muscles in your cheeks and tongue adjust to them. It is also common to experience soreness and increased saliva flow when you start wearing new dentures, but once your mouth adjusts to them, these problems will decrease.

Dental insurance providers usually cover the cost of dentures, either partially or entirely. Contact your insurance provider to see if they how much they will cover.

How do Dental Implants work?

Dental implants are posts made of titanium that are surgically embedded into the jawbone to replace lost teeth. Titanium is used because it integrates well with the bones in the body in a process called osseointegration.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants have many advantages. They are used to support a large variety of dental restorations. There is no need to remove them at night for storage or cleaning because they won’t come loose. You brush and floss them just like you would your normal teeth, so there’s no need to use adhesive or special toothbrushes. Because the implants don’t move or shift, you can speak and eat as you normally do.

Also, dental implants are great for your oral health. The presence of teeth stimulates your jaw, and your jaw deteriorates when you lose teeth. Dental implants are designed to stimulate the jaw and give it the ability to remain healthy and strong. Deterioration can still take place if the gap is left unfilled or if dentures are used
