What Can You Do to Protect Your Dental Crowns?
Posted on 8/10/2020 by Dr. James A. Krippaehne
What Can You Do to Protect Your Dental Crowns?Once a crown is placed, it can often lead to a patient being more adamant with their oral health, in order to prevent the need for future restorative surgery. This renewed attention to one's oral hygiene is often accompanied by the desire to maintain a dental crown, as its preservation will both save the hassle of needing to replace it, and the cost that incurs with it.

Tips to Protecting a Dental Crown

The most obvious and important method for protecting a dental crown is to maintain good oral health. Cleaning your teeth, twice a day, for two minutes is the foundation for maintaining the healthiness of the teeth in your mouth, synthetic or otherwise. Dental crowns require no special treatment in comparison to natural teeth, and so should be treated the same during brushing. Flossing and interdental toothbrushes are two utilities that can enhance the daily brushing routine, as they can be used to clean in between the teeth.

Two habits to avoid, in order to maintain the vitality of your dental crown, is teeth grinding and biting on hard objects. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, wears down the enamel on the biting surfaces of teeth. With a porcelain crown, it can chip or even fracture, the crown's material. This is why it is advised to reduce bruxism's symptoms, which you can do through the help of our dentists. Biting on hard objects, such as pen lids or fingernails, is also advised to avoid chipping.

Usually, dental crowns wear down at the same rate as normal teeth and, depending on the material, will need to be replaced every 10-20 years. Our dentists can give you advice on how to preserve your specific dental crown, as well as good tips on general oral health, which will help with its preservation as well.
