Ways of Telling if You Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Posted on 10/15/2019 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Ways of Telling if You Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth RemovedOne of the most common dental procedures that you will face from age 16 to about 19 years old is whether to have your wisdom teeth removed. There are many signs to look for to decide you want to have them removed.

We will go over the signs our dentist can see. As you get older, the bones in the mouth become harder, making them difficult to remove. We may remove wisdom teeth to prevent problems later on, even if you aren't experiencing pain and any of the other common symptoms.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

The number one cause to have your wisdom teeth removed is if they are impacted. Impacted teeth can have symptoms like swollen, tender or bleeding gums. You'll experience jaw pain deep in the bone or it can just swell and become stiff. You can develop bad breath that won't go away. Sometimes it becomes difficult to open your jaw.

Incorrect Growth Trajectory

Sometimes when wisdom teeth grow, they may take up way too much space in the mouth. It is commonly asked if they can be allowed to grow in and then straightened with braces. No, it is not possible; when the mouth becomes overcrowded, there is no procedure that can be done to fit together all the teeth. There just isn't enough room. Our dentist may remove all or only a few teeth.

Wisdom tooth extraction is preferred by our office to help prevent symptoms and problems that can arise when the teeth grow in. Removal avoids pain when eating because food easily gets stuck in rear molars. It prevents the cysts from forming next to your wisdom teeth.

Cysts destroy bones, roots, and surrounding structures. In severe cases, they become tumors. Removal protects against sinus issues, cavities, gum disease, and other problems. Give our office a call today. We have performed many wisdom teeth procedures. We can look at your teeth and make a recommendation on what is best for your situation.
