If you suffer from migraine headaches or tension headaches, you may be aware that there can be many different things that can trigger a migraine. Some common causes of migraines are lack of sleep, improper diet, stress, alcohol, food allergies and even simply genetics. But did you know that poor oral health can also trigger migraines? Oral Bacteria and MigrainesThere may be a connection between your frequent migraines and oral bacteria. If you are suffering from migraines, please talk to one of our dentists so that we can help determine if there is a connection between your oral health and your headaches. Some types of bacteria can increase the nitric oxide levels in your bloodstream, and this can cause a migraine. If your migraines are frequent, or if you are not certain if they are migraines, mention that to our dentist. TMJ pain can mimic migraine pain, and even cause migraines. So where does this bacterium come from? Bacteria that are present in your mouth are a result of a natural buildup of food debris, tartar and plaque. This happens daily and needs to be removed by brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once per day. The bacteria that causes migraines is a result of improper oral health care which leads to cavities and oral infections. Once these infections reach the blood stream, this is what triggers a migraine. Grinding Teeth and Misaligned JawIf you grind your teeth at night or suspect that you may have a misaligned jaw, these two things can also cause migraines and tension headaches. Our dentists will check not only for decay, but we will check for abnormal wear of your teeth to determine if that could be the cause of your migraines. If you are suffering, please do not hesitate to call our office right away and schedule an appointment. |
