We all go through stressful periods in our lives, and managing that stress is important. When stress levels get out of control, our physical and emotional wellbeing may suffer. In fact, managing your stress is a necessity if you want to maintain good oral health. Reduce Medication UsageSome people who have difficulty managing their stress find themselves on anxiety or depression medications. While there is nothing wrong with taking these prescriptions, in some cases, better stress management can prevent their use. Certain prescription medications lead to dry mouth, which can increase your risk of decay, gum disease, and halitosis, so stress management may help you avoid these issues. Stop GrindingAnother side effect of unmanaged stress is often grinding the teeth. You may do this while you are asleep, at which time you really have no control over your actions. Treating your stress can reduce the damage done to your teeth, as grinding places unnatural stress onto the enamel. Wearing a night guard can also help to protect your teeth. Prevent Mouth SoresCanker sores are something that we all deal with at one time or another. Unfortunately, they aren't well understood, but stress may be one of their triggers. Canker sores develop on the soft tissues of the mouth, and while they are generally harmless and should go away on their own, they can be uncomfortable. Don't Neglect Your Oral HygieneWhen stress becomes all-consuming, many of the other important aspects of our lives go unnoticed. This can include oral health. When you feel overwhelmed by work, school, or family life, you may not make your oral hygiene a priority. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups are all important for good oral hygiene.
