Could It Become Possible to Reverse Cavities?

Posted on 2/25/2019 by Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Could It Become Possible to Reverse Cavities? Is there a way to be able to reverse a cavity once it begins? There are things that can be done to reverse the earliest signs of decay, but typically, once a cavity is there, it needs to be filled in to repair the structural integrity of the tooth.

There is no medication that you can take to stop a cavity in its tracks and rebuild the tooth, but there is hope that it could someday become a reality.

Understanding What a Cavity Is and How to Fix It

A cavity is essentially a hole in your tooth where decay has started to form. This could be decay of the dentin within the tooth, decay of the enamel, or some combination of tissues that form your tooth. Once the hole is there, the only way to stop the damage is to remove the decay and fill the area in. If you leave the area open, more debris and bacteria can get into the hole and more decay will eventually occur.

There are many studies being done to see if stem cells can be used to rebuild a tooth once it has started to decay. While it is not a possibility now, there is hope that it could be a realistic option down the line. Many studies have shown promise in dental studies with the use of stem cells, so many hope that this experiment will eventually become commonplace in time.
